The primary serif fonts' earmark is the presence of a small line ("feet") at the base and/or bottom of a symbol or letter. They are rightfully considered as the most convenient ones for reading long printed texts with small point size. It is thanks to serifs.

The brightest examples: Times New Roman, Caslon, Palatino, Goudy Old Style, Bembo, Adobe Jenson, Berkeley Oldstyle, Bookman, Bodoni, Sabon, Baskerville.

According to conventional wisdom, such typefaces were not suitable for web-design and mobile phone applications, especially on small sized, low resolution screens. They could not convey the beauty of tiny lines ans little details of serifs. However, recently appeared Garamond, Minion, FF Tisa, Freight Text, Miller, Calluna, Plantin perform admirably.
