Dingbats are also known as the non-alphabetic characters as all the letters and numbers are replaced by pictograms that do not indicate single sounds of language.

Pictograms that are used in Dingbats can be multi-thematic: people, animals, plants, etc. Furthermore, different decorative ornaments (borders, lines, fleurons, vignettes, bullets, arrows) and user interface design elements (buttons, signs) can be regarded as Dingbats. They essentially facilitate work of designers due to their wide range and opportunity to easy change color and size.

Dingbats, and especially ornaments are used in graphic design for books and magazines: in headlines, for splitting columns, for frame compilation, in complex compositions. Normally, one Dingbat serie has several symbols in one stylistic solution.
